Sabres never made Orpik an offer

From John Vogl of the Buffalo News:

The desire in Western New York to have a tough, home-grown defenseman on the Buffalo blue line didn’t reach HSBC Arena. The Sabres were never in the running for Orpik, the defenseman from East Amherst said Wednesday after re-signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“They called my agent and asked what we were looking for,” Orpik said. “That was the only time we heard from them. They never came close to making a contract offer. They were way on the outside, to be honest.”

No surprise really. Aside from the fact that Orpik is from Western NY (which made him more appealing), his salary demands didn't fit in with what the Sabres are willing to spend on a defenseman playing that role for their hockey club.

Orpik returns to Penguins

From TSN:

Sportscentre just reported that Brooks Orpik has re-signed with the Penguins for 6 years and $22.5 million.

Well, no one else was taking the Penguins' money. Kidding aside, the Penguins need defense more than they need forwards anyhow. This is a solid signing, as Orpik is a rough, stay-at-home defenseman--which is exactly what the Penguins need. His contract isn't exorbinant and is about what the market is paying.

Sabres out of the running for Brooks Orpik

From the Buffalo News:

I just got off the phone with Darcy Regier. The Sabres will not be in the final running for the services of Brooks Orpik.

"We did have conversations," Regier told me. "I don't expect to be a part of that going forward."

Read more from John Vogl here.

The Sabres were hoping that Orpik would prefer to return to play closer to his hometown.

Orpik rejects Penguins offer

From Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Defenseman Brooks Orpik has received, and rejected, a contract offer from
the Penguins.

"We did receive an offer, which we turned down," said Orpik's agent, Lewis
Gross. "But we're still talking."

Read more from Molinari here.

There is still time for both sides to get a deal done; however, if the sides don't have a deal by July 1, I suspect Orpik will end up elsewhere.

Could Orpik end up in Buffalo?

From the Buffalo News:

The Sabres aren't allowed to talk to other teams' free agents until July 1. But the Sabres' prospects can talk to their brothers, so they've got that going for them, which is nice.

Andrew Orpik, the East Amherst native who was the Sabres' seventh-round pick in 2004, lives with his brother, Brooks, in the offseason...

"I think Buffalo is a place he'd definitely want to come. He grew up here and he's got a special bond with the place, but like I said, it's a business, too, and it's his way of living so we'll see what happens."

Speculation will continue all around the NHL as to where Orpik may end up. As of now, it sounds like he'll stay on the east coast.

Orpik would like to stay in Pittsburgh

From Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Orpik's desire is to stay with the Penguins, who selected him 18th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He has appeared in no fewer than 64 games each of the past four seasons. Orpik's agent, Lewis Gross, would not say Wednesday if the Penguins have presented a contract offer. However, indications are the club will soon make a formal offer, if it has not already.

Many around the NHL believe Orpik could command offers of $4 million annually from other teams. He is thought to be willing to give the Penguins a so-called "hometown discount" if they provide him a long-term deal.

We will see in time, just how much of a discount Orpik is willing to take. If the rugged defenseman isn't signed by July 1, I have my doubts as to whether he will be back.

Orpik waiting on Penguins offer

From Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Orpik, whose star shined late in the regular season and during the playoffs while playing with defenseman Sergei Gonchar, is not expected to command either of those salaries. But he is seeking a long-term deal.

The Penguins might entice him to take accept a little less than market value - likely no worse than $3.5 million annually - with a contract slotted at four years or beyond.

There is a chance Orpik will dip his toe into the free-agent waters July 1 and present the Penguins with a chance to match - or perhaps simply get close - to any offer.

If Orpik does hit the open market, I expect there to be quite a bit of interest in the gritty defenseman. Whether the Penguins can find enough room to sign him, probably depends on their negotiations with Hossa and Malone. That reports seem to indicate talks with Hossa and Malone aren't close, gives Penguins fans some hope that they can at least re-sign the steady Orpik.

Should the Oilers be interested in Orpik or Eaton?

From Jonathan at Copper & Blue:

Looking at the numbers, I like both players. Orpik has played well in a softer role, while Eaton has posted slightly less impressive numbers in more difficult icetime. The difference between them, as I alluded to in my introduction, is what kind of money they're going to receive. Orpik is widely expected to recieve between 4.5 - 5M/yr on his next contract. As valuable as a physical element is, it simply isn't that valuable. It makes me wonder what Matt Greene would fetch the Oilers on the trade market. Eaton, on the other hand, will in all likelihood be eminintly signable, but there are concerns with him as well. Signed to a two-year contract by the Penguins in 2006, he's played a total of 71/164 possible games with knee and wrist injuries. That's getting up into Ethan Moreau territory, and to top things off he's still recovering from a torn MCL suffered last December.

Read his entry entry here.

I have to say that I agree with Jonathan. The Oilers don't need to spend that type of money on Orpik. As for Eaton, not only is he injury prone, but he hasn't proven to be much of an upgrade over any of the Oilers' seven defensemen.
