Mike Myers is back on the silver screen this summer with a new movie officially licensed by the NHL, it features teams, arenas, fans and even players.
The NHL has joined forces with paramount and your TV will be flooded with ads during the playoffs until the movie launches on June 20.
Here is some info from the press release: In the comedy "The Love Guru," Pitka (Mike Myers in his first original character since Austin Powers) is an American who was left at the gates of an ashram in India as a child and raised by gurus. He moves back to the U.S. to seek fame and fortune in the world of self-help and spirituality. His unorthodox methods are put to the test when he must settle a rift between Toronto Maple Leafs star hockey player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) and his estranged wife. After the split, Roanoke's wife starts dating L.A. Kings star Jacques Grande (Justin Timberlake) out of revenge, sending her husband into a major professional skid -- to the horror of the team's owner Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba) and Coach Cherkov (Verne Troyer). Pitka must return the couple to marital nirvana and get Roanoke back on his game so the team can break the 40-year-old "Bullard Curse" and win the Stanley Cup.
Myers co-wrote the script featuring his beloved hometown Maple Leafs and shot the film in that city. For the production, the NHL provided Myers and Paramount Pictures unprecedented access and rights, including the use of NHL marks and NHL game action footage, permission and facilitation to film inside NHL arenas, and guest appearances by NHL players and the Stanley Cup, the most revered trophy in all professional sports, marking its first starring turn in a feature film.
My thoughts:
I have been a fan of Mike Myers for quite some time. Back in the SNL days with skits such as Sprockets, Coffee Talk, Simon, and of Wayne's World. The Wayne's World and Austin Powers (1 & 2) movies are classics and staples of my home library.
I am excited for Romany Malco he's a great at improvising in 40 Year Old Virgin and should have some good on screen chemistry with Myers.
This movie will provide some much needed exposure for the NHL. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Alba will draw fans who currently may not have interest in hockey. With the NHL currently taking a backseat to the NBA, MLB and NFL, it is nice to see the entertainment industry put it into the spotlight.
Here's the trailer, I'll add it to my list of movies to see this sumer.
