Guerin had shoulder surgery

From Greg Logan of Newsday:

Islanders captain Bill Guerin had major shoulder surgery about a month after last season ended, a team spokesman acknowledged yesterday. The forward, who turns 38 in November, is expected to recover in time to take part in training camp in mid-September.

The team did not say how long Guerin played with his injury or specify which shoulder was injured. But if the decline in Guerin's productivity over the course of the season is any indication, the injury likely affected his play.

Read more about Guerin's injury here.

I'm not so sure this injury was the reason Guerin's productivity slowed down. He started the season off playing like he did in his prime, but age/wear and tear seemed to catch up with him. His final numbers on the season were about where most expected when he signed with the Islanders.
