Umberger signs four-year deal with Blue Jackets

From TSN:

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed centre R.J. Umberger to a four-year contract the club announced today. Terms were not disclosed.

Columbus acquired the forward and fourth-round draft pick from the Philadelphia Flyers last month for a first round draft pick and a third-round draft pick.

"Acquiring R.J. last month was an important first step in our efforts to improve the hockey club this summer and we are pleased that he will be a part of our organization for the next four years," said GM Scott Howson. "He is a competitive, hard-working player who will add versatility to our top six forwards."

Read the entire report here.

This signing isn't a surprise. The Jackets just acquired Umberger for a first round pick and weren't going to suddenly get into a contract stalemate with the versatile young forward. My guess is the deal is around 4 yr, $14 million.

Interesting salary prediction.

If you're right, it means that both a forward who exceeds all expectation by leading his team in playoff points [RJ] is worth the same (4yr, 14M) as a defenseman viewed as so mediocre that he doesn't even get dressed by his team for half their playoff games [J. Finger].

Umberger is an overpaid and overhyped powerfoward.

Sincerely,
Chris Gratton in 1999 who signed with the Flyers.
